Policyholder advice

Information for Lloyd's policyholders on preparing for a hurricane, what to do in the event of a hurricane and where to direct enquiries.

Preparing for a hurricane
There are a number of practical and administrative steps that you can take to prepare for a hurricane.

Ensure you have your insurance details available. For example, who is the named insured? Do you have a policy number? What type of coverage? What are your Retail Broker's details? Who issued the Declaration Page?

Check your insurance policy's coverage. For example, does the policy cover flood and windstorm damage? Is the coverage adequate? What items are included and excluded? What are the limits of the policy? Does the policy pay for 'additional living expenses' should your home become uninhabitable?

Update your home inventory. Do you have a list of your belongings, including costs, purchase dates and serial numbers? Do you have receipts for your items? Have you taken photos or video of your belongings? Have you kept these in a safe place?

In the event of a hurricane
Listen to local authorities and use your own best judgment: take all prudent steps to ensure your personal safety.

Here are some things to consider if you must leave your home:

If time allows, take precautions if you leave your property. For example, have you secured your windows and doors, and taken other appropriate measures to protect your property? Have you notified your family/friends/broker where you can be reached?

Report damage and make emergency repairs. Have you contacted your broker to report any loss or damage? Have you made emergency repairs to ensure your property does not incur further damage? Have you documented repairs?  Have you been put in touch with a registered adjuster?
