Lloyd’s Chairman, Lord Levene, today presented the first group of Lloyd’s Leadership Programme graduates with their certificates for successfully completing the nine-month course.

Congratulating the 17 graduates, Lord Levene highlighted that the future success of Lloyd’s is dependent on its leaders, both from the Corporation and the market.

“The core strength of this programme is that it involves leaders from Lloyd’s and from the market. The network and relationships that the graduates build is as valuable as the business and leadership skills that they learn,” Levene said.

The programme consists of ten different areas of leadership behaviour, including: understanding the dynamics of transformation and change; relationship management; understanding individual leadership styles and impact on others; and conflict management.

Ben Sayles, Operations Manager, Market Operations & North America, at Lloyd’s commended the course and stressed the professional and personal development it provided.

“With the Lloyd's Leadership course you don't just learn from Corporation and Managing Agent colleagues, but also from the excellent London Business School academics and cross-industry experts that take you through the course. It delivers something tangible at the end of the course, which makes it practical to use in an everyday working environment.”

Launched in November 2007, the Leadership Programme consists of three week long modules at the London Business School, with a two to three month gap between each one. During these gaps, the graduates have to work together on projects with colleagues and present it to a ‘Dragons’ Den’ panel at the conclusion of the programme.

The panel of senior Lloyd’s, market and London Business School representatives, includes Lloyd’s CEO Richard Ward and Lloyd’s Market Association CEO David Gittings.

Member of the winning team, Juliet Philips, Head of Tax at Lloyd’s, said the project helped her to recognise how critical it is for a business to fully understand the environment in which it operates when devising its strategy.

“The course enabled us to have interesting and enlightening conversations with CEOs who think in strategic terms all the time. The access to market CEOs and understanding of their way of thinking helped give us a sense of the big picture and why a business might fail if its strategy is inappropriate or out of date.”

Interest in the programme from the Corporation and Managing Agents has been strong, with the second and third group now fully subscribed – with 24 participants on each – and a number of participants already enrolled for the fourth group, which commences March 2009.

The programme is designed and run by the London Business School, chosen for their strong reputation in the area and the creative approach they brought to designing the syllabus.
