Sources of capital

The capital which backs the syndicates comes from corporate and individual members (known as 'Names'). Corporate capital was introduced in 1994 and now makes up 93.1%* of the market capacity.

In 2007, 1017 corporate members provided £15,007m* of capital and 1,124 individual members provided £1,094m* of capital to the Lloyd's market.

The market has the capacity to accept insurance premiums of £16.1bn* for the 2007 year of account.
