Student mentoring at Tower Hamlets College
Time: One to two hours each month or one-off workshops
Even with qualifications under their belts, young people often find it difficult to get their first break into a job. This is certainly true in Tower Hamlets and Hackney which have the highest levels of youth unemployment in the UK.
With mentoring, we invite 15-18 year olds to regular meetings to get a first-hand feel of what work and working environments are really like. Over time, they’ll benefit from hearing about your own career journey and what you learned along the way. All the while, meeting helpful people, and just soaking up the business atmosphere, has the energising effect of building their confidence and raising their ambitions.
Of course, the insights flow both ways: volunteers find out what it’s like to grow up as a teenager these days in some of the most diverse, vibrant – and challenging – areas in the country.
Many volunteers find an hour or two each month is manageable. If not, another option is to take part in a one-off, one-day workshop, focused on jobs and successful first interviews.
